ALA is an essential fatty acid that the body cannot synthesize. The second richest source, nuts, reaches 10 to 16%. Chia is comparable but more expensive and less available. For any formulator who wants a high-dose vegan omega-3 without fish oil, flaxseed oil is the active with no realistic substitute.
